Greece is a top summer destination. Whether it is a visit to the Acropolis in Athens or an islands cruise to Mykonos and Santorini that you are dreaming of, Greece is undoubtedly the best country to spend your summer. But, let’s be honest, everyone in Greece knows that “there’s no place like Halkidiki”!
It is a saying that comes out of every local’s mouth, and it is true. In Halkidiki, you will find anything you need, and while vacation might equal rest, we have to suggest 7 of the wisest things you can do in Halkidiki to make your trip a unique and unforgettable experience!
1. Explore all of it
Halkidiki seems like an endless coastal paradise that many people do not take full advantage of. Surely, sitting by the beach all day long is the idea of a perfect vacation to many, but staying in one place or a couple of beaches means you will miss out on the great beauty of the region. Consisting of three “legs” as Greek people call them, Kassandra, Sithonia and Atho, Halkidiki’s peninsulas definitely belong to the top 10 magical places in Greece.
Even though Atho, with its Ayion Oros (translated as Holy Mountain), is a religious place with numerous monasteries and solely accessible to men, the other two peninsulas should be added to everyone’s bucket list. With the different beaches competing for the title of the best, Halkidiki is a place where sea lovers and people who love summertime will not want to leave.
2. Relax
Greeks say “halara”, loosely translated as “take it easy”, and that is exactly what you should do. This is not me taking back what we just said about how you should explore Halkidiki and not just sit in one place, but, after you go on your little adventures, find your perfect beach relax there until the sun sets down.
Enjoy the turquoise waters, the sun, and the beautiful landscape, grab a cocktail or two and dance to the music sounds coming from the beach bar right behind you. Alternatively, if you want to save all your energy for partying later, take your beach towels, buy a beach umbrella if you don’t already have one, and sit at a beach that has no beach bar and less crowd.
3. Go on a cruise trip
While you are enjoying a day at the beach, you will see many cruise ships and boats sailing further deep in the sea. So why not hire one for a cruise adventure of your own? Going on a day cruise in Halkidiki is a fun experience that will allow you to discover some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches and caves.
If that is not enough of an adventure, while on that boat, you should also visit some of Halkidiki’s islands like Ammouliani and Diaporos. Small and picturesque, they are an extension of Halkidiki’s greatness, and their beaches are equally
mesmerizing. So, schedule a day’s trip and jump on that boat for an alternative experience of a Greek islands’ cruise!
4. Try doing water sports
If you are craving some adrenaline and fun, water sports are for you. If you want to explore the seabed, then you want to try scuba diving. The are many places offering diving lessons, so you can embark on your first underwater tour with an expert to guide you through the unknown waters of Greece.
However, if you want to stay afloat and embrace the sun, doing some fun activities on the water like waterski and paragliding are the way to go. If that sounds too extreme, then jump on a floating sofa and sunbathe while the water moves you around!
5. Go clubbing
When it comes to nightlife in Halkidiki, Kassandra is the part of Halkidiki you want to be. With a wide variety of cafes, bars, and clubs, you can find something to satisfy all tastes, all day long. The cosmopolitan environment, the crowd and the non-stop music will set the mood for some legendary nights out. Whether you are a party animal or you simply want a chill night out trying some exquisite cocktails, Halkidiki knows how to serve you.
The places to visit are numerous, however, most people will tell you to go straight away to Kallithea, and there’s a good reason for that. The most famous bars and clubs of Halkidiki are there, turning the area into a party zone that even people from Thessaloniki visit at night for endless fun!
6. Enjoy the Greek food
Travelling to Greece, trying some traditional Greek food is already on your bucket list. In Halkidiki, you can tick off that box by tasting some of the best dishes. The traditional Greek taverns and restaurants in Halkidiki promise to offer you unique tasting experiences that will remain unforgettable.
Fresh fish and Mediterranean cuisine are two of the things you should absolutely try. Just don’t forget to order a cold beer or, even better, some ouzo to accompany all the delicacies on your table.
7. Visit Thessaloniki
Talking about Greek food without urging you to visit the Queen of food in Greece would be a big mistake. Thessaloniki is without a doubt the no.1 place in Greece to try the best Greek food. Thankfully, it is right next to Halkidiki, meaning a day’s trip there is the easiest thing to do. I know that you want to make the most out of your days at the beach, so no rush there. You can always take a swim and lay under the sun before or after a short getaway in Thessaloniki.
However, I am certain that you will not regret missing out on a beach day once you step foot in the city. Historical, captivating and with a unique vibe, Thessaloniki is the place to go if you want to explore Greek cuisine. Don’t despair if you can’t make it though: many restaurants and taverns of Thessaloniki have a second summer “residence” in Halkidiki, where you can taste their heavenly-made food.
